A Brother’s sewing machine is not something very different from regular sewing robots. Most of them are almost similar in operation. And after going through a number of manuals that come along with Brother’s sewing machines. We have concluded that almost all the different sewing machines have a similar approach to the question of how to change the needle in Brother’s sewing machine.
We have read those manuals so you don’t have to. Here we are explaining the whole procedure of needle replacement right according to the method suggested in Brother’s sewing machine manual. Even if you use a sewing machine from any other brand, this guide still applies.
What Size Of The Needle Is Appropriate For The Brother Sewing Machine?
Replacing a needle with a new needle depends on two things mainly. First, what kind of needle one should use? And secondly, that size will be a perfect fit for his brother’s sewing machine. Well, to answer these questions, there are a couple of needles by SCHMETZ Sewing Machine Needles (system 130/705) that fit Brother Household Sewing Machines.
All the needles that SCHMETZ offers are compatible but the most perfect fit for Brother’s Sewing machine are Universal, Chrome, Embroidery, Quilting, and Leather. This means the range has a variety of needles for different fabric types and different work projects. Thick fabrics need a strong needle than a thin fabric. Anyhow, you can pick from these needle options according to your fabric demand.
Signs That A Needle Needs To Be Changed:
Circumstances often lead to change. Similarly, if you find any issue going on with your sewing machine. Or if it is not working properly, then this might be a signal that you need to change your needle. Check out this list of reasons to know if your sewing machine needs a new needle.
- A bent, broken, or dull-edged needle can be a reason for replacing it with a new and appropriate needle.
- The project gets delayed when the thread constantly breaks and this can be a sign that a needle is not working well. So it’s better to change it right away.
- Brother suggests changing the needle with every new project.
- Brother also suggests keeping the needle according to the quality and thickness of the thread and fabric type.
- Any heavy-duty Brother machine requires the daily replacement of needles.
- In Manual machines, Professionals suggest daily or once-in-a-week replacement of needles.
- If the fabric is showing large punctures then change the needle.
- A dull and damaged needle creates a popping noise that causes a puncture in the fabric. This sign is a reason to change the needle.
- And the most common reason is the skipped stitches that can also be uneven.
All these issues signalize the necessity of changing a needle.
How to assess a needle?
A needle should be assessed before insertion. It’s simple and essential. Just place the flat side of the needle on a well-balanced, parallel, and flat surface and assess its straightness from the sharp edge from the top and both sides.
If the needle is straight and the tip is sharp then replace it with the previous needle. It’s the right one. Otherwise, throw away any bent or broken needles. A bent needle may cause injury.
How to Change a Needle in Brother’s Sewing Machine?
My previous post about Singer’s sewing machine showed the procedure of changing needles and Brother’s sewing machine manual. Both have a similar strategy that requires two basic steps. The first is to remove a previously existing needle and the second is to insert a new and appropriate needle.
Let’s discuss it in detail.
How to Remove a Needle in Brother’s Sewing machine?
- Step 1: First things first, Power off the sewing machine by switching off the button and removing the cord through the plug. This is an initial safety step that avoids you from having any harm to your hand or accidental stitch.
- Step 2: If your Brother’s sewing machine has an LCD installed on it (which is available on most Brother sewing machines). Look for the Needle Position Button and this will raise the needle.
- Step 3: if the message “ OK to automatically lower the presser foot” appears on the LCD display then Press OK to proceed.
Note: Pressing OK locks other keys and this saves you from accidental touch to any other option or harm to your hand. Also before locking the sewing machine entirely, make sure to place a fabric piece beneath the needle. This will avoid the needle from dropping into the hole in the needle plate.
- Step 4: Look for the small screw on the right side of the needle. The screw on the Brother’s sewing machine is not easily loosened by hand. So we need a small flat-head screwdriver to loosen the screw. But make sure not to remove it completely. Removing the screw can create an unbalanced or maladjustment of the needle. Unscrew counterclockwise which means towards your direction.
Note: Keep hold of the needle as it might fall out after loosening. That’s why fabric placement over the needle plate hole is essential.
- Step 5: Now as you are holding the loosened needle just grab the needle with your thumb and pointer finger and remove it. You can also loosen the presser foot for having more space for your fingers to remove the needle.
How to insert a new needle in Brother’s sewing machine?
After removing the old needle, it’s time to insert the new needle right according to fabric type and thread strength.
- Simple and Manual Procedure of inserting a needle: The first way to replace a needle is by grabbing the needle, so the flat side of the needle is facing the back and pushing it up into the screw clamp as far as possible. But don’t go too hard on it. So you might not break the needle. It’s as easy as you can do it by hand by pointing your fingers towards a specific angle.
- Then tighten the screw clockwise to avoid wobbling the needle. Do not over-tighten the screw so it does not disturb the machine entirely.
- A contraption by Singer for every sewing machine: Secondly, you can also use a nifty clearance plate. The plate is a bit tilted or curved and has a hole at one edge. You can insert the needle in there and push it through the screw clamp easily. It’s actually a singer’s product but can be used for multiple sewing machines.
- A Dual Option of Needle and Thread inserter: Third and the more beginner-friendly option is the Dritz needle and thread inserter. This equipment makes needle and thread insertion completely easy and convenient. You just put the needle in this inserter and the rest is its job. Make sure to push it through the screw clamp and it inserts the needle and runs the thread through the needle efficiently.
