Once you start working on a sewing machine, there are a couple of procedures that you may find a bit hard to grasp. The same happened to me when I came across the procedure of winding a bobbin.
This means the proper way to thread a Brother’s sewing machine bobbin. It’s quite a technical task and hard to remember in the beginning.
Fret not! There is nothing much to worry about. Maybe, it was difficult for me and can be easier for you. However, after reading the manual for instructions from Brother manufacturers and practicing it several times. I completely excel at this task. And to make it convenient and easy for you too.
How to thread a bobbin in Brother’s Sewing machine?
If you are interested in reading this post then chances are that you might have purchased a new Brothers Sewing Machine. And first things first, you are going to thread the bobbin. But how?
To answer this ‘how’, here we are going to suggest some easy steps so you can follow and chase the thread to wind the bobbin instantly.
Brothers suggest only using a bobbin that is absolutely suitable for your sewing machine model. And for the majority of sewing machines, it’s SA156, Class 15. As the majority of the brother’s sewing machines hold a plastic bobbin. In case of using the wrong bobbin, you can internally damage your sewing machine.
The size of the bobbin has a variation for two different sewing machine ranges. So choosing the right size and accuracy for your machine is an essential step.
Additionally, this information is taken from the brother’s manual and we haven’t left a tiny piece of instruction. So it’s completely safe to follow up on these steps.
Winding the bobbin:
- Step 1: Pull the spool pinout and extend it all the way up. Then place the thread spool on it. If your machine has a horizontal spindle, then the spool cap is a must to be inserted on top of the spindle. The machines that offer vertical spindles, just bring the thread where it pulls to the left from behind.
Note that if your spool of thread is mal-adjusted or placed incorrectly then it will stop your sewing machine from working properly.
- Step 2: There is a tension disk on the left of the sewing machine body. Just pull the extended thread end around that disk using your right hand. Make sure that the thread goes under the disk and around it (in the counterclockwise direction). You’ll be able to sense its accuracy by tightening of the thread once it slips under that disk.
- Step 3: Thirdly, Now pass the thread end from the inside of the bobbin into the hole in your bobbin. there’s a bobbin winder shaft on which you’ll place the bobbin now. Once you will turn the bobbin clockwise. The spring on the shaft will slide into the bobbin groove and that will also feel like a click in there.
- Step 4: Now sliding the shaft to right will sound like a click which means that it has been placed rightly. This is to slide the projection into the notch of the bobbin.
Note that the pulled-up thread should extend at least 3 to 4 inches from the bobbin hole. If the thread will not be held taut then it will be harmful to you as well as the machine. To avoid such a situation, hold the thread taut at and straight up to 3 to 4 inches. This will save you from self-injuries or any wound.
- Step 5: Now turn on the sewing machine but avoid doing it by pressing the foot controller. This will result in accidentally injuring the hand or self-harming. It’s safer to turn on the machine from a tab or button.
- Step 6: Hold the thread end (tip of thread) and press the foot controller gradually to wind the thread around the bobbin quickly a few times. Then stop the machine there.
Note that most of the brother sewing machine models automatically stop, when the bobbin is fully winded. If you do not have this feature in your model then you can switch it off by clicking the on/off tab. And continue the follow-up steps to manually completely wind the bobbin.
- Step 7: The remaining excessive thread over the bobbin should be trimmed by leaving at least 1cm of thread over the hole of the bobbin.
Note that leaving the excessive thread untrimmed before winding the bobbin completely will tangle around the bobbin making the whole bobbin messy and end up breaking the needle.
- Step 8: Simply start the sewing machine by pressing the foot pedal or controller.
- Step 9: Now wait for the bobbin to seem fully winded or just spin slowly then just take off your foot from the foot controller. Cut the excessive thread and then remove the bobbin by sliding the bobbin winder shaft to left.
The bobbin doesn’t work properly and loosens the thread tension or may break the needle if it’s not winded properly.

Most sewing machines follow the same procedure required to thread a bobbin. The only bit of difference is that some of the latest models, mostly computerized, stop winding automatically when the bobbin is completely full. Otherwise, the procedure is all the same for two different categories in brothers’ sewing machines for threading a bobbin.
Although, it takes time to memorize the complete thread pathway. But with brothers, it is much easier and better. As you will see on your sewing machine, the brothers have diagrammatically. This visual display makes the whole experience easier and more convenient.
Most importantly, while working with bobbin or winding procedures. For instance, pick the right-sized, accurate, and suitable bobbin for your brother’s sewing machine. Secondly, be careful with switching off the machine as forgetting this step can bring accidental injuries.
Thirdly, Do not leave excessive thread once done with the winding completely otherwise a tangled mess of thread will jam the machine. And that’s all!
